Templeton

ABOUT

Templeton is located in north San Luis Obispo County between Atascadero and Paso Robles and is a small rural town reminiscent of the old cowboy days of its past. With a small commercial district consisting of a few short blocks the town consists of larger lots, agriculture and preserved in time of the way it used to be here in the county.

HISTORY

Templeton was founded in 1886 and got its name from Charles Crocker, a Vice President of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Instead of naming the town after himself, Crocker, he decided on the middle name of his son Charles “Templeton” Crocker. The railroad at the time ended in Templeton and you had to take a stagecoach into SLO to continue traveling south.

GEOGRAPHY

North County and Templeton has rolling hills with some areas of flat lands. Most of the residential lots are 5 acres and larger, so the density of Templeton is very low. The area size of Templeton is 7.8 square miles.

CLIMATE

The overall temperatures are mild winters and dry summers where you will have the coolest winter months some days coming down to freezing temperatures but usually in the 40’s and in the Summer months will have 90 and 100 degree days. The further east you are from the 101 freeway, the more the climate will change.

DEMOGRAPHICS

In Templeton there are approximately 8,000 residents, a small but a fast growing community, actually the fastest growing community in the County with a 60% increase in the past 30 years.

ECONOMY

Templeton is primarily an agricultural and ranching community and medical from the Twin Cities Hospital with wine and olive businesses that all contribute.

CULTURE/LIFESTYLE

A small close knot community, reminiscent of a modern day cowboy town where the people are friendly but enjoy their way of life.

THINGS TO DO

Templeton offers several vineyards and wineries, plus olive oil producers, shops on Main Street and a small variety of restaurants with a few attractions for locals and tourist alike would be Happy Acres Family Farm and Jack Creek Farms.

REAL ESTATE

Templeton has a small amount of residential income and commercial properties and the residential and agricultural properties sell from $525,000 to $4,500,000.

SERVICES

Templeton has the Templeton Community Services District (templetoncsd.org) for water and sewer with the waste contracted out. Many of the larger parcels are on well and septic.

LANDMARKS

Templeton has the Feed and Grain silo on Main Street that you cannot miss.
